About Superficial

Hi, I'm VJ Superficial.

I was born in '78 as youngest of six. Soon there were a lot of dirty dypers, Play Doh, crayons, Tonka's and Transformers, but i won't bother you with my youth sentiment, mail me if you're interested ;). I'll fast forward to school.
After being on a couple of way too christian schools i ended up at The Arts & Crafts College where i studied graphic design.
The ACC was 50% about the craftmanship of drawing and painting and 50% analog photography. I soon realised that that just wouldn't cut it in the market of graphic design and creative dtp so i got myself a computer and got to it.

After a lot of trial and error i kinda got the hang of it and i graduated.

I worked in the dutch nightlife as a Light-Jockey to get money to pay for my education.

After my education i got to work, as a day job i did projects which meant i never had the same boss for more than 6 months to a year. This offered me many opportunities to find out what i was good at and what i suck at. It was a great time in which i learned a lot and got all the challenges i needed and some i didn't need. In the end it was always worth it and sometimes even more

My job at Fontys Hogescholen (teaching students how to work with Quark Express and Photoshop) introduced me to the Media 100 and to video editing as a whole and i liked it from th start. I liked it so much i started fiddling arround with Premiere and After Effects. Together with my knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop, which i got from my print background, i kinda got everything done i wanted to. Which to be honest wasn't much at the time.

One day my brother and i decided to organise some parties under the name GROW. I designed the logo and flyers and LJ'd at the parties. But after some not so succesfull parties the regular VJ got into some dispute with the club owner and left. So we were GROW minus one VJ. We thought we should get a new one but they were hard to find so my brother came up with the idea to let me do it. After being somewhat pessimistic i downloaded a beta trial of Resolume. An application which the former VJ used to beta test because it wasnt released yet.
It took only 5 minutes for my pessimism to wear off and change into a rush of optimism. In this rush i bought a Schuttle barebone and an external HD to put the clips on.
Starting out with all the bloopers i could find on the internet and some Flash movies i made i started to VJ which grew into a weekly gig at the club. And from there it grew further into what it is today, 7 years later.
In the meantime i VJd in venues like The Matrixx, De Melkweg, De Effenaar, Now and Wow, Trance Energy, Dance Valley, De Waerdtse Tempel, Het Paard van Troje, 013, Panama and many more, with DJs like Marco V, Benjamin Bates, Marcel Woods, Fedde le grand, Lucien Foort, ErickE, Michel de hey and many many more...

I think VJing should be all about the fun and the experience of the evening so i try to emphasise the music as much as possible by trying to translate the atmosphere of the music into moving images.
I do that by using a lot of home made flash content that reacts to the music. I also like to use a lot of old Techincolored material (royalty free of course) and CGI i like to make with Adobe After Effects and Blender.

Some day a couple of years ago a guy asked me how i would describe my style so he could put it on a flyer so i called it ContrAddiction, the name kinda stuck.

For some time now i've been making DVDs for DJs to spin on the Pioneers' DVJ1000, i like doing that because it gives me the opportunity to listen to a track a couple of times and than get an idea what i want to do with that track.
That's a huge difference from improvising on a party where most of the times there's no direct contact with the DJ.

Check out my MySpace page. I'm not really active on MySpace, but if you invite me to your friendslist i'll be your friend forever...

It's a hell of a job to upload all my movies to my You Tube page so they're not all on it but i will be adding clips "regularly" ;)
